Adult Learning Workgroup Training Exchange

Background

The AETC Adult Learning Workgroup began meeting in September 2009 to identify, share, and develop resources and tools related to the topic of adult learning. A needs assessment was conducted to learn more about how the AETCs incorporate adult learning principles into their training activities. The needs assessment identified several areas of enhancement which were addressed by the workgroup over the following year.

First, an AETC Adult Learning Expert list was developed to identify AETC faculty with expertise in topics such as learner assessment, communications skills, and group facilitation. These experts can serve as mentors to other faculty within the AETC network. The Workgroup also provided key feedback on the reorganization of the Trainer Resources section of the AETC NRC website, and contributed resources to continue to grow the online repository. Finally, to help AETCs determine whether and how adult learning principles were implemented into training programs, the AETC Adult Learning Workgroup members developed a guide entitled Assessing the Integration of Adult Learning Principles in AETC Training Programs.

The training exchange brought together AETC administrators, faculty, and evaluators from across the country to further discuss these tools, with a focus on an ideal approach to the integration of adult learning principles into AETC training programs.
