Introduction
The AETC Cultural Competence and Multicultural Care Workgroup developed new AETC tools and resources addressing cultural competency and health literacy in HIV care and treatment. On September 12, 2006, the AETC workgroup presented on the following:
 | Cultural Competency Guiding Principles |
 |
 | Cultural Competency Organizational Self Assessment (OSA) Question Bank |
 |
 | Health Literacy Case Study Collection |
 |
 | Resource Lists |
 |
The training exchange brought together AETC providers, educators, and program coordinators from across the country. Presenters discussed the rationale for these tools and resources as well as highlighted components that directly address the needs of HIV providers and educators. Following the presentations, a question and answer (Q & A) session encouraged audience participation to ensure effective orientation to the tools and resources.
Background
Cultural competency is an important component of any approach to mitigating disparities in health access and outcomes among minorities and other underserved populations. Cultural differences between providers and patients affect the provider-patient relationship. How patients feel about the quality of that relationship is directly linked to patient satisfaction, adherence, and subsequent health outcomes. If the cultural differences between patients and providers are not recognized, explored, and reflected in the medical encounter, patient health outcomes may suffer. The AETC Cultural Competence and Multicultural Care Workgroup was charged with the task of facilitating collaboration among the AETCs in the identification, development and dissemination of materials for HIV providers and educators. After reviewing a resource inventory and through extensive discussion, the Workgroup divided into three subgroups and set out to develop tools and resources addressing both cultural competency and health literacy. These tools and resources have been developed collaboratively by experienced AETC providers and educators through their involvement with the AETC workgroup. The tools are in draft form, they have not been piloted, and the training exchange is a forum in which the developers received additional feedback.
Objective
To familiarize participants with new AETC tools and resources addressing cultural competency and health literacy in HIV care and treatment.
Presenters did not discuss the actual content of the tools and resources, but commented on their development and use.
The tools and resources are in draft form and the Training Exchange is a forum in which the developers received additional feedback.
