These presentations are from the first of 2 workshops for HIV affected or infected consumers to learn about research. The goal of the workshops is to prepare consumers to serve as a resource for other community members by building knowledge and understanding of clinical research and related issues. Participants gain knowledge and skills to participate in the protocol development process, to critically evaluate protocols and results of clinical trials from the community viewpoint, and to communicate accurately and clearly to community members about research.
Once trained, participants will act as liaisons between the community and researchers in order to assess the concerns and needs of the community. They will translate these concerns and needs into research questions and will communicate directly with researchers. Participants at the first training were encouraged to form a network with other workshop trainees. Fifteen consumers from RWCA Title IV programs around the country participated in the training, funded by the HIV/AIDS Bureau (HAB), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Part two of this training will be conducted in June 2007.
