Overview
The epidemiology is clear. HIV is a disease that has disproportionately affected medically-underserved communities, including communities of color and communities where shared injection drug use is common.
Unidentified HIV can also lead to an inaccurate differential diagnosis. In this course, experts in both Emergency Medicine and Infectious Disease will help the ED to more quickly identify HIV infection.
New technology and other guidelines reduce the burden of counseling and allow definitive results in 20 minutes.
After this self-study audiocourse, participants should be able to:
Describe changing epidemiological trends in HIV infection
Identify risk factors for acquisition of HIV and describe components of HIV risk assessment
Describe the HIV Rapid Test (HIV RT)
Give examples of appropriate use of the HIV RT in the ED setting
Recognize the common manifestations of acute HIV infection
Describe the mechanisms for diagnosing acute HIV infection
Recognize signs and symptoms of early and late symptomatic HIV infection
Identify HIV-related and common AIDS-defining conditions
Describe the appropriate management of an occupational exposure to HIV
