The Northwest AIDS Education and Training Center (NWAETC) has partnered with the African Americans Reach and Teach Health (AARTH) Ministry to work toward AARTH's strategies for building capacity. AARTH is a faith-based nonprofit organization established to respond to HIV/AIDS and other major health issues affecting people of African descent in the Pacific Northwest. Their four-point strategy includes developing and delivering culturally relevant health education and training materials, technical assistance, increasing access to resources and advocacy for better healthcare systems.
NWAETC and AARTH are also working with other partners, such as the American Red Cross, to increase the number of HIV/AIDS instructors at the grassroots level by training and certifying 28 individuals from faith houses throughout King County, Seattle. Increasing resources at the grassroots level is slowly helping to erode the barriers that surround HIV/AIDS in the African-American community.
The NWAETC and AARTH recently completed a ten-month production of "Who Will Speak for Me?," a mini-documentary that focuses on personal stories and humanizes the HIV epidemic in this region to help African-American communities become more aware of the presence of HIV/AIDS. AARTH's goal is to identify host sites and facilitators who will establish safe spaces for healthy dialogue about HIV/AIDS issues that demand serious attention.
