Prevention with Positives Training Exchange

Date of Report: 01/2005
Source: AETC National Resource Center

In response to the emerging need to incorporate HIV prevention into the medical care of people living with HIV/AIDS, the AETC National Resource Center (NRC) coordinated a teleconference training exchange. During this 90 minute session, four AETC faculty -representing the Mountain Plains, Northwest, Pacific and Pennsylvania/MidAtlantic AETCs- in collaboration with Partnership for Health, shared state-of-the-art Prevention with Positives (PwP) training materials they developed. Participants were able to download the accompanying slide sets prior to the call or access the AETC NRC website and review the slides online during the telephone presentations. Over 90 experienced AETC trainers participated in the guided conference call. Following each presentation, there was an opportunity for participants to provide immediate feedback to the presenters, ask questions, and discuss strategies for training with the materials.

A training exchange provides a forum for experts to share their experiences with specific training materials and discuss lessons learned from implementation. The low-tech format allows a nationwide audience of busy clinicians to participate with no additional time or travel expense. Trainers from across the country can gain familiarity and comfort with materials that they can use for their own training presentations, and thus increase the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the investment in materials development. For the presenters, the PwP Training Exchange was a chance to obtain helpful feedback on their materials from experienced trainers, and to explore how the materials may be adapted for national use.

The PwP Training Exchange reached participants from 46 cities in 30 states, including 10 of the 11 regional AETCs as well as the AETC NRC and the AETC National Evaluation Center (NEC). Representatives from the National Network of STD/HIV Prevention Training Centers (PTCs), I-TECH, two state health departments and six university-affiliated HIV programs also participated. Most of the evaluation respondents (91%) recommended that similar training exchanges be offered in the future.
