An intensive collaborative effort by clinical faculty representing all 11 regions of the AETC network has culminated in the revised edition of the
Clinical Manual for Management of the HIV-Infected Adult
. Led by NRC Medical Editor Susa Coffey, MD, more than 90 chapters in ten sections were reviewed and updated. The
Clinical Manual
includes sections focusing on the following topics:
- Testing and assessment
- Health maintenance and disease prevention
- Antiretroviral therapy
- Antiretroviral complications
- Complaint specific workups
- Disease specific treatment
- Pain and palliative care
- Neuropsychiatric disorders
- Populations
- Resources for clinicians and providers
The 2006 edition comes 13 years after the first edition, which was developed by the Midwest AIDS Training and Education Center (MATEC) and the Southeast AIDS Training and Education Center (SEATEC). The original manual addressed the needs of the "midlevel" clinician--advanced practice nurses and physician assistants--who comprise a significant proportion of the HIV primary care providers in the United States and elsewhere. Experience has shown that a broader range of providers--physicians, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, advanced practice nurses, physicians assistants, dentists, and others, appreciate the nuts-and-bolts format of the guide. This edition maintains the practical approach of prior editions, with expanded content to meet the needs of its wide audience.
Currently available on the AETC website (
www.aidsetc.org
), the web-based version of this manual received nearly 100,000 hits from January-May 2006 and the number of hits is steadily increasing each month!
The print-based version will be made available to the AETC network at the Ryan White CARE Act (RWCA) Grantee Conference August 28-31, 2006. To obtain a copy of the manual at either the RWCA Training and Technical Assistance Grantee Meeting 2006 or the 9th Annual Clinical Update, please visit the AETC NRC exhibit booth. Beginning September 1, 2006, a limited supply of print copies of the manual will be available. You can request a copy by contacting the AETC National Resource Center at 973-972-6587.
