The Pennsylvania/MidAtlantic AIDS Education and Training Center (PA/MA AETC)
recently completed publication of four pocket guides for primary care, HIV,
emergency room, substance abuse treatment, and reproductive health
providers. The pocket guides are a valuable and practical tool for
clinicians to utilize in case finding and secondary prevention efforts among
specific at-risk populations such as women, substance users, incarcerated
and recently released persons, and adolescents.
Serving as a guide for clinical risk assessment and screening, they were
principally authored by PA/MA AETC Principal Investigator Linda Frank, PhD,
MSN, ACRN. Other PA/MA AETC contributors were Monica Fisher, BS; Avram
Machtiger, MEd, MPH; and David M. Korman, JD. Anna Forbes, MSS of the Global
Campaign for Microbicides, also contributed to the pocket guide for women.
The guides illustrate how clinicians can successfully approach and maintain a
relationship with patients to ensure proper screening and risk assessment.
Each guide looks at common barriers to case finding within the specific
population and provides suggestions to lower or eliminate such barriers.
Similarly, each guide emphasizes counseling methods for secondary prevention
and possible contact notification.
The guides will supplement the recently revised Recommendations for HIV
Testing of Adults, Adolescents, and Pregnant Women in Health-Care Settings
(MMWR, Vol. 55, No. RR-14, September 22, 2006), providing for more routine
testing of persons between the ages of 13-64.
All four guides can be downloaded from the PA/MA AETC website
www.pamaaetc.org
. Hard copies will also
be available in limited quantities from the PA/MA AETC and orderable through
the website, mail, or telephone (412-624-1895).
