Laser Pointers and Beyond...SEATEC's Faculty Mentoring Project

Date of Report: 01/2009
Source: Southeast ATEC

In November 2008, the Southeast AIDS Training and Education Center (SEATEC) launched its first Faculty Mentoring Project for clinicians who wish to build their HIV/AIDS training capacity. The project goal is to cultivate trainers who fulfill clinical training needs in support of Local Performance Sites (LPS) in their home states. It consists of a two-day retreat on presentation skills, facilitation skills, and curriculum development. Over the following year, two training delivery opportunities are observed by an experienced SEATEC instructor.

Twelve practitioners from five of SEATEC's states participated in the initial retreat held in Atlanta. The group included two physicians, one physician assistant, eight nurse practitioners, and one nurse. Retreat instructors included experts in HIV clinical care; HIV counseling and education; and adult learning techniques. Each participant received a notebook and flash drive of resource materials; individualized feedback on training skills and techniques; and opportunities to practice training delivery in front of the group. Their technical assistance and mentored training activities will occur in 2009.

Evaluation Plans . Prior to the retreat, participants completed an online survey that captured both previous clinical training experience and self-rated levels of expertise with various training skills. The tool will be re-administered after participation is complete to measure changes in experience and perceived skills. In addition, an experienced SEATEC instructor will use a standardized form at the observed events to assess mentees' use of effective education strategies and the overall quality of their trainings. Finally, key informant interviews with LPS coordinators will examine facilitators and barriers to utilizing these newly-minted trainers for local needs.

Project Costs . There is no fee charged to the mentees or their affiliated LPS for participation in this project. Mentees will receive speaker fees for their two observed trainings and full financial support for training and project-related expenses from SEATEC's Central Office. Upon completion of the project, participants will be considered faculty instructors and receive financial support for future trainings from their state's LPS. The initial costs of this project will require a substantial investment of staff time and resources from SEATEC's Central Office, approximately $30,000. Actual savings will be measured by comparing the increased number of trainings provided by new faculty instructors and the reduced expense of using local trainers as opposed to a small number of regional consultants. Building clinical training capacity within each state will ultimately yield savings in reduced time, travel, and labor costs by expanding and promoting the use of local experts in underserved areas of the region. Each mentee even received a personal laser pointer to mark the transition to training pro!
