Source: Pennsylvania/MidAtlantic AETC

As the Clinical Director of the Pennsylvania/MidAtlantic AETC (PA/MidAtlantic AETC) University of Maryland at Baltimore local performance site (LPS), Bruce Gilliam, MD develops educational materials, including curricula, and manages educational programs directed at community providers of HIV care throughout the region. Dr. Gilliam has taught providers in the HIV medical clinic through didactic lectures, one-on-one case discussion sessions, and mini-residencies. He is also the lead faculty trainer for the LPS's CDC Routine HIV Testing Initiative as well as co-lead physician trainer of the AIDS Certified Registered Nurse (ACRN) Review Course.

The University of Maryland LPS has collaborated with the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene in Baltimore as well as the Johns Hopkins LPS to educate primary care providers on the importance of routine HIV Testing. Over the last 12 months, the LPS has initiated HIV Testing in three primary health care settings. In addition, the University of Maryland LPS has developed a HIV Routine Testing Toolkit which provides state law, guidelines, and educational tools for primary care providers to implement HIV testing in their practice.

Over the last two years, Dr. Gilliam has served as the co-lead physician trainer for the ACRN Review Course. This course was developed and led by Hazel Jones Parker and other nurse educators within the PA/MidAtlantic AETC under the direction of Linda Frank, PhD, MSN, ACRN. The purpose of this program is to provide nurses with an organized review in preparation for the ACRN exam. The training has received outstanding reviews. The best news comes from the participants as they report they have taken and passed the ACRN exam.

Dr. Bruce Gilliam is also the Medical Director of the Family Health Center at Maryland General Hospital; Director of Curriculum Development for AIDSRelief, the consortium funded by the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief; and Program Director of the Infectious Diseases Fellowship at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.
