Commentary
A significant proportion of HIV-infected individuals in the United States harbors viruses that are resistant to antiretroviral (ARV) medications. The development of drug resistance mutations can significantly compromise the results of ARV therapy. This article provides an excellent review of the mechanisms involved in the selection of ARV-resistant virus, the significance of individual mutations, and the effects of viral resistance on HIV pathogenicity and drug treatment.
