AETC Primary Care Workgroup

Background

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) has become a clinically manageable disease in the United States. As a result, HIV/AIDS providers must increasingly integrate primary care responsibilities into their practices, and address co-morbidities in the context of HIV infection. The Primary Care Management for the HIV/AIDS Provider Workgroup was formed to support the HIV/AIDS providers in the primary care management of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH/A). The Workgroup was charged with the task of facilitating collaboration among the AETCs in the identification, development and dissemination of materials for HIV/AIDS providers.

To focus the efforts of the Workgroup, the AETC National Resource Center developed and disseminated a survey to gain an AETC network-wide perspective about the importance of primary care topics for HIV/AIDS providers. The survey determined that the priority training topics were: Chronic Pain Management, Depression, Hepatitis B and C Co-infection, Lipid Disorders, and Substance Abuse.

The Workgroup set out to develop training tools for each of these five topics. The format, content, and supporting materials were designed to address the challenges of managing these co-occurring primary care issues for patients with HIV infection. The AETC Mental Health and HIV/AIDS Workgroup joined the effort and collaborated to develop clinical management tools to support the assessment and management of Depression and Substance Abuse in the context of HIV infection.

These tools have been developed collaboratively by experienced AETC clinical trainers and researchers through their involvement with the AETC national workgroups. As a package, the tools outline the broad spectrum of primary care and mental health awareness necessary for comprehensive HIV/AIDS primary care management. The package also presents a practical guide to help providers approach patients about these primary care topics.

In 2007 the Florida/Caribbean AETC reconvened available members of the original group to update the materials previously created. The new materials were completed in March, 2008.

Objective

To guide the management of primary care co-morbidities and complications that emerge in patients with HIV-infection.

Ongoing Evaluation

We encourage you to share feedback on the tools. This package is intended for the busy clinician and our hope is that it is sensitive to needs of HIV providers with little access to expert referral. We recognize that there is always room for improvement in these evolving resources. We invite all comments.
