Summary
Skin and soft-tissue infections caused by methicillin-resistant
Staphylococcus aureus
(MRSA) have become increasingly common in recent years. A sharp rise in the incidence of community-acquired MRSA abscesses and other soft-tissue infections in certain populations, including both HIV-infected and non-HIV-infected men who have sex with men (MSM), has meant that many clinicians are faced with questions about the evaluation and treatment of skin infections. These guidelines review general issues pertaining to skin and soft-tissue infections, including concise information on the evaluation and management of MRSA soft-tissue infections, with recommendations for determining antibiotic susceptibilities and selecting antibiotics.
