New CDC Recommendations: Making HIV Testing Routine
Chicago, Illinois
March 7, 2007

The event will allow attendees to gain an understanding of the recommendations, their rationale and the current HIV testing law in Illinois. Designed to address the needs of leaders in ambulatory care settings located throughout the Chicago area. This program will include a panel presentation by experts in the field, who will share information about the recommendations, Illinois law, experiences implementing routine testing in a clinic setting, and cost/reimbursement issues.

Implementation Committee
Participation on the implementation committee with CDC for the primary care clinic settings and will be helping write sections of developed guidelines.

Webcast Regional Training
Regional 4TC Group currently developing a webcast training in two parts on the new Recommendations, specifically for STD and FP providers, with our assistance for content

Purpose: This program will enhance the ability of primary care providers to detect HIV infection, deliver routine care to HIV positive individuals and refer to specialists as appropriate.
Objectives: Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

Pacific AETC

One-day conference on HIV Rapid Testing in Phoenix, AZ
April 24, 2007

June 1-2: US/Mexico Border 3 TC collaborative training in Imperial County, CA: Focus on Testing, to include HIV testing. This training will include the use of an evaluation form that was developed for all AETC border trainings that focus on HIV testing capacity building.

Various annual one-day HIV update conferences will include a session on the new guidelines. These will take place in Sacramento, CA (UC Davis), Santa Rosa (North Coast Area LPS on 3/24/07), Oakland (East Bay AETC) and Irvine, CA (UC Irvine LPS on April 25, 2007).

East Bay AETC is including information on the guidelines in all clinical training. Slide sets are available.

Other planned workshops on routine testing:

San Ysidro Health Center staff ? April, 2007 (San Diego)

Grand Rounds at Queen's Medical Center on May 4, 2007 (Honolulu)

One-day training to focus on the guidelines, date not yet set, in Honolulu. This program will include travel support for clinicians from neighbor islands to attend.

LA: Monthly training for new staff at LA County Jails includes information on HIV testing.

UCLA's annual conference: "Coping with Hope" May 17, 2007 for nurses and mental health professionals (will include a session on implementation of the guidelines).

USC LPS's MAI project includes door-to-door HIV information/education visits with storefront clinics in East Los Angeles, which serve a predominantly Latino population. Written materials and training offers include information on HIV testing guidelines.

Southeast AETC: SEATEC

Collaboration to Boost Testing in an Urban Emergency Department
SEATEC is partnering with the Rollins School of Public Health as well as the Departments of Medicine and Emergency Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine to initiate routine testing in the Emergency Department at Grady Health Systems.
Date: Needs assessment conducted fall 2006

Key training needs assessment findings were:

dot Clinical case discussion and lecture are the preferred educational methodologies.

dot Rapid testing, postexposure prophylaxis, and Georgia law pertaining to HIV are the training topics of greatest interest.

dot Almost a third of respondents expressed interest in a level III HIV preceptorship.

dot At present, little HIV testing happens in EDs.

dot A major reported barrier to offering HIV testing is concern about managing follow-up for patients who test positive.

SEATEC plans to launch an intensive training series for all ED staff as a next step.

Incorporating HIV Testing into Routine Medical Care: New Opportunities and New Challenges
A series of 1-day trainings for program managers, risk managers, administrators, and health care workers in health departments, hospitals, and in community and public health ob/gyn, family planning, and primary care settings.
