It's the Law: HIV Testing in Pregnancy in New Jersey

Author: Elaine Gross, RN, MS, CNS-C
Source: François Xavier Bagnoud Center at UMDNJ
Date: 08/2008

Description:

In June, 2008, NJ P.L.2007.c.218 changed HIV testing in prenatal care in New Jersey from "opt-in" to "opt-out," reflecting the most current CDC recommendations for HIV testing for pregnant women, including repeat HIV testing in the third trimester. A Train-the-Trainer (TOT) curriculum was implemented at half day workshops for perinatal nurses throughout NJ in collaboration with the NJ MCH Consortia. The workshops were funded by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services.

The curriculum includes an update on prevention of mother to child HIV transmission, prenatal and third trimester HIV testing, rapid HIV testing in labor and delivery/newborn HIV screening and interventions to reduce perinatal transmission. The training strategies are interactive; the focus on knowledge, skills building and problem-solving through case discussions.

Included in the TOT package are: TOT objectives, case studies, a sample agenda, and slide set with speaker notes.
