Syphilis Online Description:This document addresses the clinical manifestation, diagnosis and treatment of syphilis in patients with HIV infection. While the presentation and management of syphilis in the majority of co-infected patients is similar to that of those not infected with HIV, several atypical presentations may be encountered in early syphilis and more frequent cases of neurosyphilis are reported in HIV-infected patients. This guideline contains guides to screening, key clinical features of syphilis in HIV patients, and information on the diagnosis of neurosyphilis. Recommended treatments for the various stages of syphilis and appropriate follow-up are included. The guideline emphasizes that clinicians need to intensify their prevention and risk reduction message to those patients who present with syphilis; management of partners is also addressed.
