Each year, the NRC coordinates national workgroups that focus on specific clinical or programmatic topics. The selection of topics is based on information received through needs assessment activities such as the annual needs assessment survey, AETC NRC Advisory Board input, Directors' meetings, site visits, and resource assessment of existing materials. The workgroups are usually chaired by content-area experts from within the AETC network or from a related National Professional Association. Workgroup membership is comprised of regional, local, and national AETC participants as well as other content-area experts. Workgroup members convene via conference call; all of the logistics are coordinated by the NRC.

Typically, each workgroup begins by coordinating an inventory of existing materials and resources on the topic. Gaps are identified and prioritized. Decisions are then made on materials or resources that the workgroup will develop to address these gaps. Near the end of the workgroup process, participants conduct a training exchange to share these new materials and resources. A training exchange is a national teleconference, for which participants download the materials beforehand, dial in to the operator-assisted call, and follow various presentations made over the telephone. During the training exchange, participants are encouraged to provide feedback on the new developed materials or resources.
