Border HIV Hero / Héro VIH de la Frontera: George Fareed, MD Imperial County, CaliforniaGeorge Fareed is a physician practicing in Imperial County on the border of California north of Mexicali, Baja California Norte. When he started his HIV practice early in the epidemic, he found that most of his patients were traveling as far as San Diego and Palm Springs for their HIV care. In 1992, in order to improve the quality of care for these patients he worked with Clinicas de Salud del Pueblo and the Imperial Valley County Health Department to better HIV care in the Imperial Valley. In addition to caring for HIV patients scattered through all the small towns of this county, he also collaborates directly with HIV specialists in Mexicali, Mexico to provide continuing care for binational patients. Dr Fareed is also a leader in sports medicine, with a focus on tennis, and has treated many international tennis superstars, including Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi. Links | |
