A group discussion is an activity that allows participants to share their experiences and ideas, solve a problem, or apply content information to different situations. The participants do most of the talking rather than the trainer.

In a small group discussion, participants are divided into small groups (usually of 3-6 participants). Each small group can be assigned a different question or discussion topic. Each small group is given time to discuss their assignment. Highlights of the small group discussions should be shared with the large group. Key points from each small group can be written on flip chart paper and posted for the remainder of the training.

Small discussion groups are an excellent way to get all participants involved. This method builds a sense of belonging to a team and provides an opportunity to validate and/or change the learner's perceptions and knowledge.
