This booklet is designed for adolescents living with HIV who are contemplating taking ADHERENCE (ART) or who are currently taking ART. It discusses how HIV effects the immune system, how HIV anti-retroviral therapy works, what types of medicines are available to treat HIV, how to adhere to these often complicated treatment regimens and how to manage side effects to the antiretroviral medicines.

The parents and young people living with HIV who reviewed this booklet said it was very helpful in making treatment decisions. One parent said it helped her daughter, "see how important it is to take care of herself and to take her medications. She takes it more seriously now." Other reviewers thought that the booklet was too long for some of the younger readers, but the question and answer format helps the reader address one topic at a time. The reviewers suggested that physicians, social workers and adherence counselors distribute this booklet.
