SYNOPSIS/DESCRIPTION:
This booklet is designed to assist patients in making treatment decisions. It includes, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) guidelines to HIV medication written in "non-clinician" language, information on blood test to monitor HIV, and a patient self-assessment guide.
SYNOPSIS OF CONSUMER REVIEW:
Reviewers agreed that the "Patients' Guide to HIV Medicines" is "informative and helpful" to people initiating treatment. One reviewer commented, "if this type of booklet was available when I was starting the drug cocktail, then the medical information would have been more clear and decisions easier." The booklet promotes discussion with physicians by presenting to the reader twenty-six questions to ask during a visit. Reviewers found the patient's self assessment guide to be a "very important tool to use." It addressed critical topics such as, housing, disclosure and nutrition, but it is also very difficult for people newly diagnosed, or new to taking HIV medication, to confront all of at once. Therefore, reviewers recommend this booklet be used during or near the time of a visit with a case manager, nurse, mental health counselor and/or physician.
