SYNOPSIS/DESCRIPTION:
"A Sister's Story" is an educational tool brought to you by Bristol-Myers Squibb Virology, which focuses on prison inmates and encourages them to confront their HIV status through HIV testing. This comic book tells the story of an incarcerated woman, Wanda, who learns that her sister has HIV infection. The booklet addresses many issues related to HIV testing, including the fears about getting tested, stigma attached to being HIV positive and the benefits of getting tested early. The comic also describes how HIV attacks the body.
SYNOPSIS OF CONSUMER REVIEW:
The incarcerated women who reviewed this booklet agreed that it is a very effective tool that motivates readers to consider HIV counseling and testing. Reviewers noted that the booklet is easy to read, informative and "keeps your interest since you have a lot of time to read on the inside." The reviewers stated that the ending of the story is particularly helpful because it discusses positive lifestyle changes and "starting over on the outside" providing "happy ending." Reviewers identified several staff who could distribute the booklet in a correctional facility including: support leaders; orientation trainers; and medical staff.
