SYNOPSIS/DESCRIPTION:
The goal of the video is to assist people living with HIV in making the decision around participation in a clinical trial. The video uses narratives from clinical trial participants to explain what clinical trials are, the differences between phase I, II, and III, why placebos are used, and what mandatory safeguards are.
SYNOPSIS OF CONSUMER REVIEW:
One reviewer said that this is a "quality video, which is clear, easy to understand, professional and very effective." The reviewers liked that bilingual, cultural and linguistic concerns are addressed. Another reviewer remarked that it does not "sway the viewer one way (to participate) or the other (not to participate)," but instead it "communicates the basics." The reviewers agreed that this video would be an effective tool for promoting group discussion and encouraging a healthy decision making process. They also agreed that case managers, HIV/AIDS educators, and physicians would most likely distribute this piece.
Important Notes:
The NRC content reviewer noted that the video has little scientific information regarding the nature of clinical trials, how drugs are administered and what they cost. Instead, the video fosters discussion among participants and their physicians considering to participate in a trial.
