There are two major types of HIV: HIV-1, predominant world-wide; and HIV-2, prevalent in Western Africa. West African countries with HIV-2 seroprevalence greater than 1% in the general population include: Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Mauritania, Nigeria and Sierra Leone. Other West African countries include: Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Niger, Sao Tome, Senegal and Togo. Angola and Mozambique are African countries which are not in Western Africa but have high seroprevalence of HIV-2. (MMWR 1992) This Question and Answer sheet was developed to assist providers to: 1) identify clients at risk for HIV-2 infection, 2) ensure appropriate HIV testing for those at risk for HIV-2, 3) understand basic information about the genetic diversity of HIV, and 4) provide clear prevention messages about HIV-2.
