Topics in the Nursing Care of People Living with HIV/AIDS

Description:

Five training modules designed to equip nurses working in a range of settings including doctors' offices, hospitals, ambulatory care and correctional settings, with the basic knowledge needed to provide safe, comprehensive care to clients with HIV/AIDS. Topics include antiretrovirals, adherence, resistance testing, hepatitis C, substance abuse and mental health, and care of women.
  • Module 1: Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Antiretroviral Therapy [PPT 957K]
    Objectives: (1) Discuss the epidemiology of HIV in the U.S; (2) Describe the HIV replication cycle; (3) Discuss ARV therapy; (4) Identify methods of evaluation of ART effectiveness. 70 slides.
  • Module 2: Adherence, Resistance, and Antiretroviral Therapy [PPT 552K]
    Objectives: (1) Define adherence; (2) Describe assessment of determinants of adherence to ART; (3) Discuss nursing strategies to promote adherence to ART; (4) Describe resistance to ART; (5) Discuss evaluation of adherence. 63 slides.
  • Module 3: HIV and Hepatitis Co-Infection [PPT 546K]
    Objectives: (1) Describe transmission, signs and symptoms of Hepatitis A; (2) Describe transmission, signs and symptoms, testing, and treatment of Hepatitis B; (3) Describe transmission, signs and symptoms, testing, and treatment of Hepatitis C; (4) Discuss education of HCV infected patient. 65 slides.
  • Module 4: Triple Diagnosis: HIV, Substance Abuse, and Mental Illness [PPT 801K]
    Objectives: (1) Describe HIV prevalence in people with dual diagnosis; (2) Discuss assessment of common mental disorders; (3) Discuss substance abuse assessment and referral; (4) Describe harm reduction approach for substance abusers; (5) Identify types of counseling for the triple diagnosed patient; (6) Describe interactions between ARVs and street drugs or psychotropics. 86 slides.
  • Module 5: Women and HIV [PPT 1MB]
    Objectives: (1) Discuss the epidemiology of HIV in women; (2) Describe gender-specific symptoms in HIV+ women; (3) Discuss ARV treatment considerations for HIV+ women; (4) Identify psychological factors in HIV+ women; (5) Discuss contraception and pregnancy in HIV+ women; (6) Describe assessment and counseling issues for women with HIV. 91 slides.
