Brief Synopsis/Description: This material is designed to inform women with HIV on how to reduce the chances of perinatal transmission of HIV. It provides basic information on the effects of AZT, how to maximize the benefits of AZT and research studies conducted to measure the safety of AZT during pregnancy.

Brief Synopsis of NRC Consumer Reviews: The parents living with HIV reviewing this material said it "takes away some fears for future mothers and at the same time it presses the importance of medical care for a healthy baby." Reviewers commented that the information is "helpful, clear, to the point and very easy to read." The graphics and pictures make it an "attractive brochure that most mothers would be interested in picking up." Some parents expressed that even though they were uncomfortable with the information provided on the research studies, they still wished this type of brochure had been available to them (during their pregnancy); it is "helpful and reassuring for mothers to read." The parent reviewers suggest providing this material in waiting rooms of clinics, county health departments and OBGYN offices.
