Synopsis/Description: This guide is designed for incarcerated
women living with HIV/AIDS. It provides answers about HIV with a
unique understanding and perspective of women in prison. The guide
covers the following topics: keeping track of your health in prison,
working with the Prison Health System for needed care, making treatment
decisions, understanding the importance of nutrition and exercise,
and managing side effects of HIV medications. The information in
the guide is accompanied by quotes and stories from incarcerated
women.
Brief Synopsis of NRC Consumer Reviews: The reviewers, who
were all incarcerated women living with HIV, said this guide is
a great resource for information because it includes excellent examples
of "what you need to know and what steps you need to take to
stay healthy on the inside." Reviewers suggested distributing
this guide to all new inmates during orientation, to support group
leaders, to clinics in the prison health system and in inpatient
drug treatment centers. Reviewers commented that the guide is long,
but agreed, based on their experience in prison, that incarcerated
persons have the time to read a lengthy piece. Reviewers found the
quotes from other women to be very supportive.
