SYNOPSIS/DESCRIPTION:
The booklet explains how the effects of protease inhibitors, the HIV disease process and lifestyle habits are all contributing factors to Lipodystrophy. The booklet offers possible solutions in controlling a patient's risk of developing lipodystrophy including: taking lipid lowering medications, insulin controlling drugs, changes in diet and exercise and tracking laboratory results on cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose.
SYNOPSIS OF CONSUMER REVIEW:
Consumer reviewers think the information in this booklet is extremely important for people who already have a basic understanding of Lipodystrophy, who are experienced in taking the HIV medications or who are showing possible signs of the syndrome. The reviewers agreed this may not be a piece to distribute to newly diagnosed clients or people initiating therapy; it may "scare" them.

However, reviewers said, for the target group or "Long-term survivor," this piece provides several options for reducing the effects of lipodystrophy and a large amount of information. Since this piece covers the topic in great depths the reviewers also recommended this for medical and non-medical providers who may work with patients affected by this. Distributing this to nutritionists, nurses, physical therapists, case managers and counselors was recommended.
