PATIENT EDUCATION MATERIALS REVIEW PROCESS
The AETC National Resource Center (NRC) feels that effective communication is critical to promote patient participation in treatment decisions, improving patient compliance with complex treatment regimens and achieving maximal health benefits. Therefore, NRC is dedicated to identifying, reviewing and increasing accessibility of high quality patient education materials that are useful tools for providers and their patients.

The three-step patient education material review process places emphasis on evaluations from persons living with HIV/AIDS and scientific and technical review by experts in the field of HIV/AIDS treatment and care. Materials successfully completing all stages of review are posted in the Patient Education Resources section of the NRC website.

Content Review:
This is conducted by professionals in the field of HIV/AIDS treatment and care. Content reviewers include: Physicians, Nutritionists, Nurse, Case Managers and Educators.

Content review criteria includes:
- Scientific accuracy
- Currency
- National scope

Administrative Review:
This step is conducted by the NRC Patient Materials Coordinator. The administrative review includes a reading level assessment using the SMOG test to assign a grade level or reading difficulty level to the material. It also provides information about the development of each material and its availability and/or ordering information.

Consumer Review:
This review is conducted by persons living with HIV from across the country and may take place in various forums - by phone interviews; in person interviews; written questionnaires; or focus groups. Three consumers review each material. This step evaluates the materials relevance, usefulness, readability by the target audience and effectiveness among target audience.

For more detailed information about the review process, or to request a copy of the evaluation forms, contact the NRC Coordinator at the NYS Department of Health AIDS Institute by e-mail at: jlp01@health.state.ny.us or by phone at: (518) 474-3459.

Organizations are encouraged to submit materials for review. Please follow the link "directions for submitting materials" or call the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute at (518) 474-3459.
