Durability
of HIV-1 Viral Suppression Over 3.3 Years with Multi-Drug Antiretroviral
Therapy in Previously Drug-Naïve Individuals [Phillips
AN et al. AIDS 2001;15:2379] This
is a report from Frankfurt in which 336 antiretroviral-naïve
patients who began triple therapy and achieved virologic control
(<50 c/ml within 24 weeks) were assessed for viral rebound during
543 person-years of follow-up. The results showed the risk of viral
rebound was 25% at 3.3 years. Of the 61 patients with viral rebound,
47 had treatment interruption due primarily to co-morbidities. Only
14 (5.2%) had viral breakthrough despite persistent HAART within
3.3 years. The authors conclude that effective HAART, once achieved,
can be sustained.
