HIV-1 Disease in Seminal Cells of HIV-1-Infected Men on Suppressive
HAART: Latency Without On-Going Cellular Infections [Nunnari
G et al. AIDS 2002;16:39] The
authors studied viral isolates in peripheral blood mononuclear cells
and seminal cells in men taking HAART with VL <50 c/ml in plasma.
Viral growth was achieved in PBMC from 16 of 28 (57%) and seminal
cells from 5 (18%). The isolates from PBMC were positive for HIV-1
2-LTR circular DNA, but this was not detected in the seminal cells.
The authors conclude that new infections do not take place in seminal
cells under complete viral suppression in vivo suggesting that latent
HIV occurs in seminal cells but represents a "compartment-specific
reservoir of HIV." posted
