Ischemic
Cardiovascular Disease in Persons with Human Immunodeficiency Virus
Infection [David MH et al. CID 2002:34:98] The
authors reviewed the records of 951 persons with HIV infection seen
at the University of Cincinnati Infectious Disease Clinic to identify
patients with proven ischemic cardiovascular disease. There were
16 patients (1.7%) who were compared with 32 controls selected by
age and sex. The results showed that patients with CVD had significantly
more recognized risk factors for this complication, lower CD4 cell
counts, and longer prior exposure to nucleosides, but no clear association
with exposure to protease inhibitors. The authors conclude that
CVD in these patients was primarily associated with traditional
risk factors such as hypertension and elevated cholesterol.
Comment: The main concern with this and many similar studies
is the duration of follow-up and sample size.
