NEWS AND NEW DEVELOPMENTS

Identification of Dynamically Distinct Subpopulations of T Lymphocytes that are Differentially Affected by HIV [Kovacs JA et al. J Experiment Med 2001;194:1731] This is a report from NIAID in which T cell tracking was performed in 17 patients before and after initiation of HAART. The results showed that HIV does not block T-cell production as previously thought, but increases CD4 cell proliferation and death. These results tend to confirm a report by Ho and colleagues [J Experiment Med 2001;194:1277].
