NEWS AND NEW DEVELOPMENTS

Impact of Discontinuation of Initial Protease Inhibitor Therapy on Further Virological Response in a Cohort of Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Infected Patients [Le Moing V et al. CID 2002;34:239] This is a report from the Antiprotease Cohort Study (APROCO), which is a 47 clinic consortium in France. The purpose was to find the frequency and reason for discontinuing the PI of a PI-based HAART regimen in 1281 patients with a median follow-up of 20 months. During the observation period, 51% discontinued the initial PI; this was due to intolerance in 52%, poor adherence in 22% and virologic failure in 15%. Discontinuation for intolerance was significantly associated with ritonavir treatment, female sex, weight less than 50 kg, and depression.
