NEWS AND NEW DEVELOPMENTS

Organizers Expand Scope of 2002 AIDS Meeting [McCarthy M. Lancet 2002;359:52] This is a report in the "Science and Medicine Feature" section of Lancet concerning the 14th International AIDS Conference to be held July 7-12, 2002 in Barcelona, Spain. The new format will give greater prominence to prevention, implementation, and policy. The plan is to have bridging sessions that "will bring people together from all tracks to discuss common concerns." The review specifically mentions as an example of the "disconnect" the paradox of science demonstrating the benefit of needle exchange and laws that prevent such programs. The format will consequently have three new tracks that will include: "prevention science," "interventions and program implementation," and "advocacy and policy." The deadline for submitting abstracts online is January 21 and for late breakers is June 1. More information can be obtained at: www.aids2002.com.
