Lactacidemia
in Asymptomatic HIV-Infected Subjects Receiving Nucleoside Reverse-Transcriptase
Inhibitors [Boffito M et al. CID 2002;34:558] The
authors measured lactate levels in asymptomatic patients receiving
NRTIs for various periods. There were 50 subjects divided into five
groups according to duration of therapy, and including one group
that was NRTI-naïve. The results are shown in the table below:

Comment:
The sample size here may be too small to draw conclusions, but an
interesting feature of this analysis is the observation that long-term
treatment with NRTIs may be associated with adaptation over time.
