Gates Gives Booster Shot to AIDS Vaccines [Science 2001;291:809]: Bill Gates announced at the World Economic Forum on January 27, 2001 that the Gates Foundation will give $100 million to the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) as a five-year grant. This represents the largest philanthropic donation ever given for HIV research. The hope is to introduce clinical trials for three vaccine products beginning 2007.
Comment: The Gates Foundation has $21 billion and now represents the major donation for international health compared to any single nation, organization, or even combinations of these.
