NEWS AND NEW DEVELOPMENTS

Increased Mitochondrial Toxicity with Ribavirin in HIV/HCV Coinfection [Lafeuillade A, et al. Lancet 2001;357:280]: This is a brief report of 15 patients with HIV/HCV co-infection who were treated with interferon plus ribavirin plus HAART and developed lactic acidosis. The authors point out that ribavirin is a nucleoside analog, and this may enhance the possibility of mitochondrial toxicity when combined with the nucleosides used in HAART. They also point out that the data available for interferon plus ribavirin treatment of HCV in patients who are co-infected with HIV are sparse, and this is a side effect that clinicians should be alerted to in the event of concurrent treatment of both viruses.
