NEWS AND NEW DEVELOPMENTS

Association Between Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head [Ries MD et al. J Arthroplasty 2002;17:135] This is a report of 50 patients who had operative treatment of osteonecrosis of the femoral head to determine the prevalence of HIV as a risk factor. There were 12 with trauma who were excluded. Of the remaining 38, 7 had HIV infection and 4 of these had no other risk factors for osteonecrosis. Among the 31 who were HIV seronegative, 4 had no known risk factors. The authors concluded that there was a statistically significant association between osteonecrosis of the femoral head and HIV infection.
