High Prevalence of HIV-1 and Hepatitis C Virus Coinfection Among Injection Drug Users in the Southeastern Region of Yunnan, China [Zhang C et al. JAIDS 2002;29:191] This is a report concerning injection drug users in the southeastern region of Yunnan province, which is a key site for drug traffic. In this study 242 injection drug users underwent serologic testing which showed that the prevalence of HIV was 72%, and the rate of HCV co-infection among those with HIV infection was 99%. The authors call for a large-scale educational program to reduce the spread of these two blood-borne pathogens.
