NEWS AND NEW DEVELOPMENTS

Effect of Adherence to Newly Initiated Antiretroviral Therapy on Plasma Viral Load [Gross R et al. AIDS 2001;15:2109] This is of the results of an observational cohort study monitoring adherence using the MEMS with 41 participants who initiated HAART in HIV clinics in Philadelphia. The primary outcome was no detectable virus with <50 c/ml at four months. Adherence was increased in those who achieved the virologic goal with a median compliance of 93% to prescribed doses. By contrast, those who did not achieve undetectable virus took a median of 70% of doses. Adherence correlated with viral load and CD4 count increase.
Comment: No surprises here, but the 90-95% rule seems to be pretty well established with the current meds.
