NEWS AND NEW DEVELOPMENTS

Estimated Global Distribution and Regional Spread of HIV-1 Genetic Subtypes in the Year 2000 [Osmanov S et al. JAIDS 2002;29:184] This is a report from the Joint HIV Vaccine Initiative of WHO and the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS. The purpose of this initiative was to determine the global distribution and regional spread of different HIV genetic subtypes for the year 2000 using molecular virology studies of strains collected in HIV/AIDS surveillance. Projections for totals were based on estimates of new cases in 2000 using representative samples from various regions. The results with 4,250 strains show that the dominant subtypes for new cases in 2000 were type C-47%, subtype A-27% and subtype B-12%. The following table shows the distribution of subtypes by region listed in rank order for the estimates for new infections in 2000.
