Effectiveness
of potent antiretroviral therapies on the incidence of opportunistic
infections before and after AIDS diagnosis [Detels R, et al.
AIDS 2001;15:347]: The
authors review the MACS database on over 2,000 patients including
1,470 with AIDS to determine the frequency of AIDS-defining opportunistic
infections. The period of HAART was associated with an 81% decline
in OIs including PCP, MAC, CMV, and esophageal candidiasis.
Comment: These data are added to a multitude of data from
other sources to show the dramatic impact of HAART on the frequency
of AIDS and AIDS-defining OIs.
