American Society for Reproductive Medicine Revises Ethics Guidelines for Fertility Treatment for HIV-infected Women

Ethical Considerations of Assisted Reproductive Technologies [Ethics Committee of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine; http://www.asrm.org/Media/Ethics/ethics94.html accessed 04/01/2000]: The new guidelines state that fertility treatments should be offered to HIV-infected women. They also state that couples should be informed about the absolute safest methods to avoid vertical HIV transmission using appropriate antiretroviral drugs, Caesarean section and avoidance of breast-feeding. These interventions will reduce the probability of transmission from 20% to 2%. The guidelines represent a major shift in position from the 1994 document which discouraged HIV-infected persons from parenthood.
