Infighting Causes Zimbabwe to Dissolve AIDS Council Board [Ahmad
K. Lancet 2001;357:942]: The
government of Zimbabwe has announced that it will dissolve the Board
of the National AIDS Council due to allegations of inappropriate
political support and mismanagement of funds. This is a country
that has been hit hard by HIV: seroprevalence is estimated at 25%,
life expectancy has been reduced from 69 years to 56 years, and
>1,500 HIV-related deaths occur each week. A 3% levy was introduced
with the creation of the National AIDS Council to manage a $1 billion
fund, but only 15% of the fund was distributed to those affected
by HIV. Some health experts speculated that the money was "diverted
to state coffers and to defense and military projects."
