Nevirapine
or efavirenz combined with two nucleoside reverse transcriptase
inhibitors compared to HAART: A meta-analysis of randomized clinical
trials [Torre D, et al. HIV Clin Trials 2001;2:113]:
The authors performed a meta-analysis of clinical trials with NVP-
or EFV-based triple drug regimens versus PI-based triple drug regimens
in five studies with a total of 730 patients. Baseline data showed
that 69% were treatment-naïve, the mean CD4 cell count was
345/mm3,
and the mean duration of follow-up was 38 weeks. Virologic response
was achieved in 215/348 (62%) of patients treated with an NNRTI-based
regimen compared to 174/343 (51%) treated with a PI-based regimen.
Virologic response was noted in 60% given NVP and 63% of those given
EFV. The frequency of adverse events was approximately the same
in both groups, but the frequency of rash was significantly greater
in those given NNRTIs (11% vs. 4%).
