Duration
of ruptured membranes and vertical transmission of HIV-1: A meta-analysis
from 15 prospective cohort studies [The International Perinatal
HIV Group. AIDS 2001;15:357]: The
authors analyzed 4,721 deliveries in 15 prospective cohort studies
to determine the association between the duration of ruptured membranes
and risk of HIV transmission. The results showed an increased risk
of about 2% with each one hour increase in the duration of ruptured
membranes. Among patients with AIDS, the probability of perinatal
transmission increased from 8% to 31% when the duration of ruptured
membranes increased from two hours to 24 hours.
Comment: This is information that has been previously published,
but the present study represents the most comprehensive analysis
to date.
