NEWS AND NEW DEVELOPMENTS

Treatment of Primary Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Infection with Potent Antiretroviral Therapy Reduces Frequency of Rapid Progression to AIDS [Berrey MM et al. JID 2001;183: 1466]: The authors report their experience with 47 patients with the acute retroviral syndrome who were enrolled from 1993 to1996. This group was compared to 20 patients who had acute HIV infection and received ACT, 3TC and IDV. The results, which are summarized in the table below, show the benefit of early therapy with acute HIV infection.

  Treated
n = 20
Untreated
n = 47s
HIV RNA (24 wks)
median c/ml
35,125 < 50
CD4 count (78 wks) Average change/mo compared to baseline

+ 12.5
+ 195
- 9.5
- 178
OIs at (78 wks) 1 (5%) 10 (21%)

Comment: It is probably expected that early treatment of HIV infection during the acute stage would be superior to no treatment. Nevertheless, this is the first group to demonstrate that benefit.
