NEWS AND NEW DEVELOPMENTS

Resistance to Antiretroviral Therapy Among Patients in Uganda [Weidle PJ et al. JAIDS 2001; 26: 495]: The authors performed resistance testing on HIV isolates from 16 patients. Among 11 who were untreated there was no evidence of phenotypic resistance or primary resistance by genotype testing. Testing 10 specimens from 8 patients receiving lamivudine showed M184V mutations in 9. There were 15 specimens from 12 patients receiving AZT and 4 showed primary resistance mutations.
Comment: The importance of this paper is that it shows that subtypes A, C, and D do not appear to have natural resistance to antiretrovirals and that testing with the Amplicor HIV-1 Monitor assay seems to provide valid results with these non-B subtypes.
