Pharmacokinetic Interaction of Abacavir and Ethanol in HIV-Infected Adults [JA McDowell, et al. AAC 2000;44:1686]: The authors examined the pharmacokinetic interaction between abacavir and ethanol since both drugs are metabolized by alcohol dehydrogenase. The results showed no effect on ethanol, but the AUC for abacavir was increased 41%, and the half-life of ABC was increased 26%.
Comment: Drug interactions are becoming an increasingly important component of HIV therapy. The results of this study are important because of theoretical concerns, but the results seem to indicate that there is no need for dose adjustments of ABC for alcoholics. posted 6/6/2000
